Dr. Iain Cleator

Iain Cleator, M.D., is Professor Emeritus of Surgery at the University of British Columbia. He currently operates the Cleator Clinic, which he founded in 2003 to care for the many patients afflicted with anorectal disorders. Professor Cleator also founded the G.I. Clinic at St. Paul’s hospital in Vancouver and held many positions there including Head of the G.I. Clinic and Head of Service.  He has carried out more than 13,000 colonoscopies and specialized in gastrointestinal and bariatric surgery during his career.

Dr. Cleator is a past President of the Canadian Association of Gastroenterologists as well as past President of the Vancouver Medical Association. Dr. Cleator has published more than 100 papers, chapters and articles, and his academic interests include the early detection of colorectal cancer. A 1962 graduate in surgery from Edinburgh University, Dr. Cleator accepted a position as academic surgeon at the University of British Columbia in 1972.

In 2005, Dr. Cleator authored the largest and most comprehensive patient study ever conducted concerning hemorrhoids.  The study involved 5,424 procedures performed on 1,852 patients using the CRH-O’Regan Disposable Hemorrhoid Banding System. To the average surgeon performing 100 procedures per year, this data represents over 54 years of hemorrhoid banding. Notably, the study documents the lowest complication rate ever published: 16 in 5,424 procedures, or 0.3%, which is ten times lower than the standard complication rates previously published over the past 45 years using re-usable instruments.
